Kids Canvas Art Ideas ( Guest Post by One Project Closer )

Thanks so much for having me here at GOMHP, Brooke!

If you've never heard of us, The Better Half is a new sister site to One Project Closer (OPC). OPC has been around almost 5 years now and is for the hard-core home improvement lovers. Kim and I (Jocie) are the wives of Fred and Ethan (respectively) and we run The Better Half, dedicated to the finer things, like DIY home decor, crafts, and sometimes kid-friendly stuff too. I write a lot of the crafty, decor posts, while Kim focuses more on gardening and updating our coupons for Lowe's and coupons of Home Depot.

Here is me and my better half, Ethan with our girls, Izzie and Lucy gearing up for what will hopefully be an awesome Raven's season!

Last month, I began a mission to organize all our kid crafts and pre-school learning books that were previously being stored in a heaping mess on top of my china cabinet and window seat in our dining room. It looked horrible!

I started with moving the china cabinet to the side and put in a small 9-cube organizer and added scrapbook paper to the back to fancy it up.

Once that was done, the wall space that previously was occupied by the tall china cabinet, looked VERY bare and boring. So, in keeping with the trend of making it a more colorful, kid space, I decided to paint some canvases with the girl's help.

Love

This first canvas was inspired by a picture on Pinterest I found ages ago. a simple idea - use painter's tape on a canvas and then paint the whole canvas. Remove the tape and the negative space provides a pretty design or word.

I added to the concept by first taping my self-healing X-acto mat and using an X-acto blade to cut more ornate letters. Using this technique, you could really cut any design of your choice for cheap. If you don't love cutting your own, you could also use stickers.

Izzie painted the canvas using acrylics - this was her favorite part of course!

Finger Print Tree

Not long ago, I had painted a similar canvas for my cousin's adoption shower , and guests were able to place their fingerprints on the tree.

This canvas I painted a little more simplistic, but the same concept. Izzie placed her finger prints on the tree after the tree trunk I painted had dried. Lucy, my 20-month-old didn't want to get her hands dirty - she's too much of a lady. :)

I tried to let go of the way I wanted Izzie to do it, which gave it a very personal and kid-like appearance. There were some crazy outlining fingerprints that were easy to coverup with white paint once it was all said and done. She did a great job and we both had a good time.

Act, Walk, Love

This third and final canvas was my favorite. Again, inspired by Pinterest - This Glorious Day put her children’s hand and footprints on paper, wrote the phrases on top of the prints, and then framed it. So simple and beautiful!

Izzie (with lots of help and supervision) put her hand and foot prints on the canvas, and then I quickly washed her hands and feet!

Then, I made my own heart stamp using craft foam and my peanut butter lid - lol!

After it all dried, I used a paint pen to write the words on the canvas. So much easier than hand-painting the words, like I did with the fingerprint tree!

Finally, I painted a small and messy pink border to add a little extra color to the canvas.

Here they all are, together on the wall!

What do you think? Have you done any kid canvases using finger painting?

Thanks again, Brooke for letting me share fun kid canvases on your awesome site.

Super Easy and Quick D.I.Y Fabric Wrapped Decor Balls

Hey ya'l!!I am so excited to be over here at Get Outta My Head Please!!

I think Brooke is super awesome and it's so fun to be able to hang out here for the day :)

I'm Kelsey from Tattered and Inked.

My blog is a hodge-podge of DIY home decor, free printables & lots of fun furniture redos.

Today, I thought I'd share a super easy way to use up some of your scrap pieces of fabric and make something fun to use in your home decor too!!

Here's what you need:

*Styrofoam Balls in assorted sizes

*Fabric

*Pins

*Fabric Scissors

First things first.

Get your fabric cut into bunches of strips.

Each ball varies on how many strips it needs depending on it's size.

But it's usually between 5-7.

Don't let them get much wider than about an inch

(and smaller for the tiny styrofoam balls)

or otherwise when you're wrapping them, they won't lie as flat and you'll have weird flaps sticking up!!

Once your strips are cut,

start wrapping!
I always started right in the middle.

Wrap the fabric around, making sure it's tight.

Once it overlaps itself, stick a pin in it :)

Keep doing this all the way around until all the white is covered.

I used lots of different fabrics, including burlap and linen so I would have lots of color and texture!!

Throw them in a funky bowl or other container and add a splash of color somewhere!

I piled mine into an over sized cloche I got at a garage sale.

Aren't they fun??

They can be used in so many different places to add a little pop and personality!

I hope you enjoyed my little bit of craftiness today and I'd love to have you come visit me at Tattered and Inked sometime!

Or just come hang with me on Facebook!!

Brooke,

thank you SO much for letting me hang here today!!

Personalized Baby Shutter

"Hi, I'm Sunday and yes, that's my name! I love DIY projects and the thrill of making something great-for cheap. I'm here to share tips for the DIY'er at heart from a wife, mom, youth pastor and shop owner, Sweet Transformations (with my amazing sisters)! What do you do with your Sunday Afternoon?"

Hello to all the GOMHP readers! First I would like to say thank you to Brooke for allowing me to visit today, what a sweet gal!

I love unique decor! I especially love to re-purpose something into unique decor. Today I want to show you a couple of cute ways to decorate with shutters.

{Personalized Baby Shutter}

First, I want to share an idea for a personalized baby gift (you could use this idea for a wedding or birthday gift as well) that I made for my new nephew. Making something special for a baby is always a good idea! I started with an old shutter, primed it with Kilz Spray Primer and then spray painted it using Rust-Oleum Enamel Spray in white for a glossy look.

Since this was for my sissy-in-law, I was able to nab her blue nursery paint and use it on the inside of the shutter for a perfect match.

For the baby's name I used wooden flags I ordered from one of my favorite online stores Pick Your Plum and stickers from Michael's.

First, I centered the stickers on the flags and then spray painted over them.

After allowing them to completely dry, I removed the stickers and WHALA- letters! Last, I distressed them a little bit so they didn't look too stark. I strung the flags together with jute twine and hung the ends from cute glass knobs.

This personalized shutter is a unique and super cute gift. The bonus was it was a big hit!

Here are a few other ideas for decorating with shutters:

{Wall Decor & Mantles}

For our shop, Sweet Transformations, we're always on the hunt for items we can re-purpose and sell. One day we lucked out on a Craigslist add for free shutters - lots of them.

We painted these shutters a variety of spring colors. We also added hardware so something could be hung on them if desired. They could be propped up on a mantle or simply hung on the wall.

You can place the hardware to hang them vertically or horizontally.

Check out this amazing Shutter Wall from Olive and Love.

Laurie from Tip Junkie shared this gorgeous mantle idea on her blog.

{Card & Mail Holders}

Shutters can also be used to hold mail and cards. I turned a couple of my shutters into Christmas card holders this year. I used small clothes-pins to attach my cards right to them.

I found this great idea at SCRAPHACKER, a brilliant (and cute) use of a shutter for a Post Card Rack!

{Backdrop for Smaller Accessories}

Have you ever found something you LOVE, but it's just too small to stand alone? A great use for shutters is to use them as a frame or a backdrop to display smaller items. In order to hang these cute chicken prints, I needed something larger. I simply attached 2 shutters with hinges and added hardware to create a piece on a larger scale; then hung my chickens with ribbon - easy peasy!

To see the post on exactly how I did these click HERE.

Look at this beautiful gallery wall idea from 2 friends & 2 cities. I've wanted to do this forever!

There are tons of great ideas on how to re-purpose shutters. If you want to try any of these ideas out, the first thing you should do is scan your local Craigslist and hopefully you can score some free ones too!

Have you ever decorated with shutters? I'd love to see your ideas!

Please send them in and I can share them with everyone!

Love you more than a garage full of shutters and endless possibilities,

Sunday

Thanks again Brooke for inviting me!
